Iran and Queen

On Aug. 23, 2004, Queen became the first rock act to receive official state approval in Iran, where Western music is strictly censored.

Freddie Mercury, who died in 1991, was proud of his Iranian ancestry. Queen was one of Britain’s most consistently successful groups of the ’70s and ’80s, and bootleg albums and singles had made them one of the most popular bands in Iran.

Here’s “Under Pressure” from the band’s 1986 performance at Wembley Stadium.
