Nine weeks after it was released, The Knack’s “My Sharona” reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 on Aug. 25, 1979.

The infectious pop tune stayed #1 for the next six weeks (only to be toppled by Robert John’s “Sad Eyes”). Billboard would later declare the record to be the #1 song of 1979. In the UK, the single reached number six.

(It was fun to hear “My Sharona” in this summer’s film “8mm,” which was set in 1979.)
