On Aug. 30, 1986, Steve Winwood had the top song in the US with “Higher Love,” from his Back in the High Life CD. Winwood is a songwriter and musician – the vocalist, keyboardist, guitarist, bassist, drummer, etc. who played in the Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, and Blind Faith. “Higher Love” would reign for one week at #1, only to be bumped by Bananarama’s cover of “Venus.”
Winwood received two Grammy Awards with “Higher Love”: Record of the Year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
(and, yes, that is Chaka Khan singing background vocals on the song)
