On Oct. 20, 1955, Harry Belafonte recorded a traditional Jamaican folk tune called “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song),” a song about a night-shift dock worker. Belafonte’s version of the song reached #5 on the US singles charts and became his signature song.
My favorite performance of the song took place in 1978 on The Muppet Show. (Belafonte tells Fozzie this is his first TV performance of the song, but I believe he first sang it on The Colgate Comedy Hour in the 1950s.)
I used to watch this with my daughters …over and over and over…
