oh ay oh (The Bangles hit #1 in 1986)

On Dec. 20, 1986, “Walk Like an Egyptian” by the Bangles was the #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100. It would remain there for four weeks.

The song was the third single to be released from the band’s second LP, Different Light (the first single, “Manic Monday,” had gone to #2. It was written by Prince, who was reportedly infatuated with group’s guitarist, Susanna Hoffs).

“Walk Like an Egyptian” was written by Liam Sternberg. The lore is that the idea came to him after seeing people walking on a ferry, trying to keep their balance. The song had been offered to Toni Basil (who had a similar pop-novelty #1 hit with “Mickey”), but she passed on it. The Bangles’ producer, Tony Kahne, brought it to the group, sensing it was a hit. The band debated whether or not to record the song. Their decision gave them their first #1 single and a whole new following worldwide.
